Why Sophie backs More United:
"Standing up for what you believe in is really important, and that’s why I am standing in Shipley. I fully support More United’s values and hope to represent them in Parliament"
About Sophie Walker
Sophie Walker is standing for the first time as the leader of WEP. She is a respected journalist who worked at Reuters news agency for nearly 20 years, covering business, finance and politics from Paris to Washington.
Although Sophie has a more difficult challenge than other candidates, we believe it is important to endorse her.
Our political system makes it tough for new parties to challenge established ones, and part of More United's role is to make politics more diverse and more accessible. The Green Party have agreed not to stand a candidate in Shipley and instead endorsed Sophie, increasing her chances of winning.
It's also important for us to challenge abhorrent views where they exist in politics: Sophie is standing against an MP who has described himself as a "vocal critic of political correctness and 'zealous' feminism". He has consistently questioned whether offensive practices such as "blacking up" are racist, whether discrimination against women exists and whether disabled workers should receive less than the minimum wage.
For all these reasons, we believe it is right to support Sophie in Shipley.
