Alistair Carmichael

MP for Orkney and Shetland

More United's values of opportunity, democracy and a commitment to protecting the environment are the values I have been striving to deliver in serving Orkney and Shetland. I pledge to continue to stand by these values if re-elected.

Alistair Carmichael is the Liberal Democrat MP for Orkney and Shetland. More United backed him during the 2017 election as his values closely match our own. Alistair has proved over the last 16 years that he is committed to addressing local issues and serving the needs of his constituents. He’s worked to boost the development of renewable energy generation in the islands and has spoken passionately about his belief in the positive impact of the union between Scotland, England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Alistair is well known for his work on human rights and has been an active campaigner for the worldwide abolition of the death penalty. Alistair's efforts to campaign against the use of a British-made drug in lethal injections were directly responsible for the Government's 2012 ban on exports of this drug to the US. There have since been reports of delays to planned executions and a drop in the overall number of executions.

He has worked with More United on a variety of campaigns. His activities include writing to the Home Secretary on our campaign to restore the Access to Elected Office Fund and co-leading our Plastics in the Ocean campaign. He co-led More United’s Legal Aid campaign alongside Andy Slaughter MP (Labour).
