Following video footage of Anna Soubry MP being abused outside Parliament yesterday More United supporters are signing this open letter to the House of Commons Speaker John Bercow. Please add your name.
Open letter to House of Commons Speaker John Bercow:
We believe in a Britain where people are free to hold opposing views and debate their politics.
Already in 2019, we have seen Anna Soubry MP and the commentator Owen Jones harassed and intimidated outside Parliament. In 2018 Jacob Rees Mogg’s children were told on their doorstep by protestors that he is ‘a horrible person’ and online abuse reached new heights with rape threats, nooses and other vile content regularly posted to MPs and other public figures.
If it continues this behaviour risks undermining our democracy.
Westminster is the home of our democracy. That is why we are calling on John Bercow, the Speaker of the House of Commons to bring together the relevant authorities and individuals to get to grips with this issue.
Brexit will continue to be an emotive subject for people across the country. Whether we leave the European Union or not, Britain must continue to demonstrate its commitment to democracy. This means whether it is online or offline politically motivated abuse, threats and harassment have to stop.
