Save Our Oceans from Plastic Waste

UPDATE: We won! Working with four MPs from four different parties we called on the Chancellor to crack down on plastic pollution. He listened and announced a tax on all packaging that does not contain at least 30% recycled material.

Here's how we did it:

  • More United's supporters voted to work with Alistair Carmichael MP (Liberal Democrat) and Ian Murray MP (Labour) in a campaign to protect our oceans from plastic pollution.
  • 10,000 of us shared our views and experiences of this issue with those MPs through a survey.
  • Two of the biggest concerns that emerged were increasing recycling of plastics and making manufacturers pay for the waste they produce.
  • Alistair and Ian submitted our responses as a report to Parliament's Environmental Audit Committee. It was used as evidence in a Parliamentary Inquiry.
  • Thanks to our action, two more MPs joined forces with Alistair and Ian: Peter Bottomley (Conservative) and Caroline Lucas (Greens).
  • The four MPs wrote to the Chancellor to demand action, and 12,000 of us added our names to that cross-party letter.
  • The Chancellor announced in the Autumn Budget a new tax for manufacturers on all packaging that doesn't contain at least 30% recycled material.

Protecting our environment for future generations is not a matter of party politics: it's about the kind of society we want to listen to.

This is proof of the power we have when we work together.
